Who’s On Third?, 1971-73 PREVIEW. FULL REVIEW HERE.Who is he? This documentary introduces an underrecognized, fiercely independent L.A. artist Who is Llyn Foulkes? His striking, varied work combines surrealism, assemblage and painting. On first glimpsing Foulkes' work one may think of Magritte, or Dali, or Francis Bacon, with a nod to Chicago Imagist Ed Paschke and West Coast assemblage artists like Ed Kienholz. It's intentionally disturbing and stands a little outside the time and place of its making. Back in the day, late Fifties, early Sixties (he was born in 1934), Foulkes was the cool outsider. He had lean, rakish good looks and was deliberately mysterious in manner. He won a big painting prize and dropped out of the Chouinard Art Institute (since moved and renamed CalArts), then joined the then cutting edge L.A. venue, the Ferus Gallery, and was given a solo show there in 1961. Then they kicked him out. Then he got famous. Then they forgot him. Now he's known again. It's all in this movie.
Llyn Foulkes One Man Band, 88 mins., debuted 30 June 2013 at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It opens a US theatrical release in New York at Film Forum 7 May 2014 and in Los Angeles 16 May.
